Abstract

The lecture notes Solid State Chemistry provide a systematic introduction to the fundamental principles governing the structure, chemical bonding, and physicochemical properties of solid materials. The course examines the relationship between the atomic and electronic structure of solids and their functional characteristics, which is essential for understanding the behaviour of modern engineering materials. The main topics include crystal symmetry and crystallography, chemical bonds in solids, elements of crystal chemistry, the electronic band structure and electrical conductivity of solids, crystal defects, and the thermodynamics and kinetics of solid-state processes. Particular attention is paid to crystal structures, coordination environments, structural transformations, diffusion processes, phase formation, and the influence of defects on the physical and chemical properties of materials. The lecture notes also address the fundamental mechanisms of solid-state reactions and the formation of new phases, providing a theoretical basis for understanding material synthesis, processing, and modification. The material is intended to develop students’ knowledge of the structural and chemical factors that determine the properties and performance of engineering materials. The lecture notes are intended for students pursuing degrees in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, and related technical disciplines. They may also be useful for postgraduate students, researchers, and specialists involved in the development, investigation, and improvement of advanced materials.
